Tottenham Hotspur complete club-record signing of Sandro Tonali

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italy international Sandro Tonali from Premier League rivals Newcastle United in a club-record deal reportedly worth up to £100 million, the north London club confirmed on Monday.

According to British media reports, Spurs paid an initial fee of £92.5 million for the 26-year-old midfielder, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

While the transfer fee was not officially disclosed, Newcastle acknowledged the scale of the move, stating that it represents the second-highest fee the club has ever received for a player.

The Magpies' record sale remains Alexander Isak’s £125 million transfer to Liverpool last September.

Tonali leaves Newcastle after an impressive spell following his arrival from AC Milan in 2023.

He played a pivotal role in helping Eddie Howe’s side reach the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 for the first time last season and was also instrumental in their League Cup triumph in 2025.

His performances earned him a contract extension until 2029, but he has now opted for a fresh challenge with Tottenham ahead of the new campaign.

"I'm very happy to be here (at Spurs). When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs - there was only one," Tonali said in a statement.

Tottenham are continuing to strengthen their squad after a disappointing Premier League campaign in which they finished 17th.

The club have already added midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United as part of their efforts to rebuild ahead of the upcoming season.

Tonali’s arrival is expected to significantly enhance Spurs’ midfield as they aim to bounce back under renewed ambitions for the 2026–27 campaign.
