UEFA slams FIFA over unprecedented Folarin Balogun ban u-turn

LONDON: European football's governing body (UEFA) has strongly criticised FIFA after the world governing body suspended the automatic one-match ban handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun following his red card at the FIFA World Cup.

The decision came after US President Donald Trump reportedly contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino and requested that the case be reviewed.

Balogun had been due to miss the United States' Round of 16 encounter against Belgium after receiving a red card, which ordinarily carries an automatic suspension.

However, FIFA opted to suspend the implementation of the ban for a one-year probationary period, while allowing the red card itself to remain on the player's disciplinary record.

The unprecedented ruling has sparked widespread debate over the independence and consistency of FIFA's disciplinary procedures, with Belgium also expressing frustration over the decision ahead of the knockout fixture.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, UEFA questioned FIFA's handling of the matter and warned of the wider implications for the sport.

"We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision," UEFA said in a statement on Monday.

"When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined."

The controversy has placed FIFA's disciplinary process under intense scrutiny, with critics arguing that external political influence should have no role in decisions affecting the outcome of international competitions.
