WATCH: Jordan Henderson suffers serious wrist injury celebrating England's World Cup win

MEXICO CITY: England's Jordan Henderson suffered a serious wrist injury while celebrating his side's dramatic FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over Mexico, with head coach Thomas Tuchel confirming the experienced midfielder has been taken to hospital.

The 36-year-old appeared to land awkwardly after falling from the advertising hoardings during the post-match celebrations at the Estadio Azteca following England's thrilling 3-2 triumph. Henderson was subsequently seen leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

Although Henderson has played only a limited role in England's World Cup campaign, making a six-minute substitute appearance in the Group L victory over Panama, the injury is a significant setback for the squad ahead of the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel revealed the initial assessment was concerning.

"Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad," said England manager Thomas Tuchel.

"It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital."

Henderson remained in Mexico City under the care of England's medical staff and did not travel back with the rest of the squad on Monday as further examinations were carried out to determine the full extent of the injury.

England are due to face Norway in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals in Miami on Saturday, but Henderson is now expected to miss the encounter.

The veteran midfielder is likely to join defender Reece James on the sidelines after the full-back sustained a hamstring injury during England's opening match of the tournament.
