World Cup 2026: Javier Aguirre hails Mexico's effort after England defeat

MEXICO CITY: Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre praised his players' effort despite their dramatic 3-2 defeat to England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, insisting he could not fault his side after their historic tournament run came to an end here at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.

The co-hosts bowed out after a thrilling contest in which England survived with 10 men to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Speaking after the match, Aguirre acknowledged England's quality and admitted that small mistakes proved decisive at the highest level.

“I can’t fault my team for anything. We did everything we could, and they’re a great team. This is the top level, you can’t make mistakes because they’ll cost you dearly,” Aguirre said.

“We took a chance with our substitutions to take advantage of having an extra man, but we weren’t able to do it. I have nothing but words of gratitude for everyone’s support.”

Mexico had hoped to capitalise after England defender Jarrell Quansah was sent off early in the second half, but Harry Kane restored England's two-goal cushion from the penalty spot before Raul Jimenez converted a spot-kick to set up a tense finish.

Earlier, Jude Bellingham struck twice in the space of two minutes to put England in command before Julian Quinones reduced the deficit just before half-time.

Despite the disappointment, Mexico earned widespread admiration during the tournament, reaching the knockout stage on home soil and producing spirited performances throughout the competition.

It is pertinent to mention that Aguirre thanked the supporters for their unwavering backing and expressed pride in his team's commitment throughout the campaign.
