Grigor Dimitrov completes emotional Wimbledon comeback with Matteo Berrettini victory

LONDON: Grigor Dimitrov produced an inspiring comeback story at Wimbledon, overcoming 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini in a gripping five-set encounter to reach the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3 victory here at Centre Court on Saturday.

The Bulgarian showed remarkable resilience to rewrite a painful chapter in his Wimbledon career.

Dimitrov had been forced to retire from his fourth-round clash against Jannik Sinner in 2025 after suffering a serious pectoral injury despite holding a two-set advantage.

This time, however, the 35-year-old left the famous court celebrating, raising his arms in delight after sealing victory in three hours and 32 minutes.

Dimitrov said the victory was especially meaningful as it marked his successful return to Centre Court after last year's injury, describing it as a personal triumph over adversity rather than simply a win.

"After last year, the way I exited, I would have never known what would have happened," Dimitrov said.

"But guess what? I am back here, and I am able to rewrite everything... I am just trying. It is not [only] about winning or losing, it is about overcoming every obstacle that I have in front of me."

The Bulgarian, currently ranked No. 146 in the PIF ATP Rankings and competing as a wild card, regained confidence with two Challenger Tour wins in Dublin before reaching the quarter-finals in Mallorca.

The victory gives Dimitrov a 2-1 advantage in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series. He will next face fellow wild card Arthur Fery, ensuring two wild cards feature in the Wimbledon last 16 for the first time since Roland Garros in 2002.
