Zimbabwe appoint West Indies great Courtney Walsh as bowling coach

HARARE: Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of West Indies legend Courtney Walsh as the bowling coach of its men's cricket team.

Walsh, who represented West Indies in 132 Tests and 205 ODIs during his glittering international career, served as Zimbabwe's bowling consultant at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup earlier this year, which saw them reach the Super Eight stage for the first time following historic triumphs over Australia and co-hosts Sri Lanka.

Although the Chevrons lost all three of their matches in the subsequent stage, their strong showing in the early phase of the 20-team mega event was widely appreciated.

Consequently, the ZC has decided to retain the coaching structure, including head coach Justin Sammons, that inspired their historic run at the T20 World Cup 2026, as it approved key appointments across the men's high-performance pathway earlier today.

Furthermore, the cricketing body also appointed West Indies great Walsh as the Zimbabwe senior men's substantive bowling coach following his successful stint as the Chevrons' consultant in the mega event earlier this year.

"Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has thrown its full backing behind the coaching structure that guided Zimbabwe to the Super Eight stage of this year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup, with the Board retaining Head Coach Justin Sammons and his technical team while approving key appointments across the men's high-performance pathway," the cricket board said in a statement.

"Among the headline decisions was the appointment of West Indies fast-bowling legend Courtney Walsh as Zimbabwe Senior Men's substantive Bowling Coach following his successful spell as bowling consultant during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka," it added.
