Brendon McCullum insists commitment to England remains strong after Stokes retirement

LONDON: England head coach Brendon McCullum has insisted his commitment to English cricket "has never wavered" despite increased scrutiny following Ben Stokes's retirement from international cricket.

McCullum's position has come under the spotlight after England suffered a 2-1 home Test series defeat to New Zealand national cricket team, marking their first home defeat in a three-match Test series since 2012.

However, the former New Zealand captain remains focused on the future.

Having signed a contract extension with the England and Wales Cricket Board in September 2024 that runs until the conclusion of the 2027 Ashes, McCullum will now turn his attention to England's upcoming five-match T20I series against India national cricket team, which begins in Durham on Wednesday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum said leading England required maintaining composure during difficult periods and stressed that he remained fully motivated despite England losing seven of their last nine Test matches since the Oval Test against India in August last year.

"My enthusiasm for English cricket and my commitment to English cricket has never wavered," McCullum said.

"I've got a firm belief in the direction that this team can go. We still have an identity about us, but we want to continue to furnish and harness that, to get us in a direction that we are the team that we want to be, and that we want to represent for the people of this country," he added.

Reflecting on the recent Test series against New Zealand, McCullum said England's 115-run victory in the opening Test at Lord's showed the side had the potential to become "a more rounded cricket team rather than just a talented cricket team".

He also defended the team's performances in the subsequent defeats at The Oval and Trent Bridge. McCullum described the loss at The Oval as difficult due to the suspension of Stokes and Gus Atkinson for an alleged breach of team protocol, while admitting England had simply been outplayed by a strong New Zealand side at Trent Bridge.

"The talent that sits within this country is immense," McCullum added. "We just need to make sure we continue to give that opportunity, but still get results along the way."

England now face a demanding schedule, with the T20I series against India followed by a one-day international series just 48 hours later.

Newly appointed T20I captain Harry Brook, who has received Stokes' full backing as England's next Test captain, was seen training with a white ball alongside fellow all-format player Jacob Bethell on the final morning of the Trent Bridge Test.

McCullum acknowledged the packed schedule but expressed confidence in the depth of England's squad.

"You can't do anything about the scheduling, it is what it is," McCullum said. "You've just got to operate around it, and the good thing is we've got some good strong options within our squad.

"We look to Durham in two days' time, and we look at the workloads that some of our boys have had in this Test, and you work out what's the right balance, and how do you manufacture it? When we get up to Durham, we'll make our plan, and we'll look forward to the Indian series getting underway."
