KARACHI: Former Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram has paid a heartfelt tribute to England all-rounder Ben Stokes following his retirement from international cricket, describing him as one of the greatest all-rounders the game has ever produced.

Stokes announced his decision to retire from international cricket during England's third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that featured countless match-winning performances and two ICC World Cup triumphs.

The 35-year-old ended his career with more than 7,000 Test runs and over 250 wickets, becoming only the second player in the history of Test cricket to achieve the prestigious double.

Following the announcement, tributes poured in from across the cricketing world, with Akram joining the long list of former and current stars to acknowledge Stokes' impact on the sport.

Taking to his social media platform 'X', the former Pakistan captain praised Stokes' achievements and said his departure would leave a significant void, particularly in the longest format of the game.

"Ben Stokes your retirement will leave a big void, especially in Test cricket which you enlivened with courage and unique skill," Akram wrote.

"One of only two with 7000 plus runs and 250 wickets in Tests speaks volume of your greatness. With two World Cup titles you've left behind a legacy of achievement. Enjoy the new opportunities that await you," he added.

Stokes enjoyed an illustrious international career after making his England debut in 2011 and his Test debut in 2013.

Widely regarded as one of the finest all-rounders of his generation, he played pivotal roles in England's triumphs at the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, while also leading the Test side during a transformative era.
