2026 NBA Draft: Washington Wizards select AJ Dybantsa with first overall pick

NEW YORK: The opening round of the 2026 NBA Draft delivered plenty of intrigue here at at Barclays Center on Tuesday, with the Washington Wizards selecting Darryn Peterson’s rival AJ Dybantsa with the first overall pick before the Utah Jazz snapped up highly rated guard Darryn Peterson at No. 2.

While Dybantsa’s selection came as little surprise, many analysts viewed Peterson as the top prospect in the class.

Utah capitalised on the opportunity, adding a player widely regarded as a franchise cornerstone and an ideal fit for the team’s long-term plans.

The Memphis Grizzlies also emerged as major winners, selecting Duke standout Cameron Boozer with the third pick. 

Boozer, who averaged 22.5 points and 10.2 rebounds during his freshman campaign, is expected to become a key figure in Memphis’ rebuilding project.

The Grizzlies further strengthened their position by manoeuvring through multiple trades and acquiring additional future second-round selections.

Elsewhere, the Dallas Mavericks selected former Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr., valuing his defensive versatility, rebounding ability and leadership qualities.

The move reunites Johnson with former Michigan coach Dusty May, who recently took charge in Dallas.

The Chicago Bulls added athletic wing Swain, continuing their youth-focused rebuild. 

His combination of scoring, rebounding and defensive ability is expected to complement an emerging core that includes Matas Buzelis and Josh Giddey.

The Oklahoma City Thunder addressed frontcourt needs by drafting towering centre Aday Mara and guard Bennett Stirtz, while the San Antonio Spurs strengthened their interior presence with Jayden Quaintance and Tarris Reed Jr.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks began planning for life after Giannis Antetokounmpo by selecting Brayden Burries and Nate Ament, two prospects viewed as key pieces for the franchise’s future.

With several notable prospects still available, anticipation now turns to the second round of the draft.
