LAHORE: Pakistan have marked nine years since their historic triumph in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, when they produced a stunning performance to defeat India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval and lift their maiden title.

Batting first, Pakistan scored 338/4 in 50 overs, which India failed to chase down and were bowled out for 158.

Led by captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, Pakistan delivered a commanding display in the final, a victory that remains one of the most celebrated moments in the country’s cricket history.

Reflecting on the achievement, former captain Sarfaraz described the triumph as the most memorable moment of his career, while crediting the entire team and support staff for the success.

“Winning the ICC Champions Trophy was the most unforgettable moment of my career,” Sarfaraz said. “It was a collective effort from the entire team, coaching staff, management and selection committee.”

Opening batter Fakhar Zaman, who played a defining innings in the final and top-scored with 114 off 106 deliveries, including 12 fours and three sixes, said the occasion remains etched in his memory.

“That innings in the final and that day are still unforgettable,” Zaman said. “The ICC Champions Trophy taught me a lot.”

Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed recalled watching the final from home and celebrating the victory passionately. He also shared a personal memory of later visiting Sarfaraz Ahmed when the trophy arrived in Karachi.

“I watched the final at home and was extremely happy with Pakistan’s win,” Abrar said.

“When Sarfaraz brought the trophy to Karachi, I went to his house but couldn’t see it closely due to the crowd. Seeing the trophy up close now is a special moment for me,” he added.

Fast bowler Khurram Shahzad revealed he was part of the squad’s preparation phase as a net bowler at the National Cricket Academy ahead of the tournament, giving him a close view of the team’s build-up to glory.

“I was a net bowler for the Pakistan team at the National Cricket Academy during the camp organised for the ICC Champions Trophy,” Shahzad said.

All-rounder Aamer Jamal said the triumph remains a proud national moment, adding that memories of the semi-final and final are still vivid.

He also reflected on a decisive momentum shift during the final, noting how a brief lapse in the field momentarily lifted pressure off India and allowed Pakistan to feel the strain of a crucial passage in the game.

“When Virat Kohli’s catch was dropped, there was pressure on everyone, but Shadab Khan’s brilliant catch on the very next ball brought Pakistan right back into the contest,” he stated.

The 2017 victory continues to be regarded as one of Pakistan cricket’s greatest achievements, with its legacy still strongly felt nine years on.
