Kylian Mbappe becomes France's leading scorer with two goals at World Cup

France captain Kylian Mbappe has become his country’s leading scorer with 58 goals after scoring a brace against Senegal at the World Cup on Tuesday.

France kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 3-1 win over African giants Senegal in Group I at New York/New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.

Mbappe put the 2022 World Cup runners-up ahead in the 66th minute, scoring his 57th goal in France colours, and notched his 58th international strike with a stunner in the stoppage time of the second half.

The French forward has broken the record held by Olivier Giroud, who scored 57 international goals for France.

"Congrats, Kylian. You made it. I'm really happy for him," said Giroud, working as a pundit for the BBC.

Giroud said Mbappe had promised him his shirt from the match.

Real Madrid striker Mbappe, 27, was under immense scrutiny heading into the World Cup as his club has not performed up to the mark since his arrival and he is criticised for the negativity in the dressing room.

Kylian Mbappe made a brilliant run, met a through ball from Michael Olise and swept it past Edouard Mendy to put his team ahead.

Bradley Barcola, who came in as a substitute in the 80th minute, scored France’s 2nd goal two minutes after arriving on the pitch.

Senegal’s Nicolas Jackson put the ball into the net past Mike Maignon, but it was disallowed as he made his run too early and was flagged offside.

Late in the stoppage time, Ibrahim Mbaye gave Senegal a late hope when he slammed an angled strike past Maignon.

But Mbappe took no time to restore France’s two-goal lead one minute later, from 30 yards out, he swivelled and rifled the ball into the top left corner, which gave Mendy no chance.

France will face Iraq in their next fixture on Monday in Philadelphia before facing Norway in their final group match on June 26.
