New York Knicks beat San Antonio Spurs to snap 53-year NBA title drought

NEW YORK: The New York Knicks ended a 53-year wait for an NBA title on Saturday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 to secure their first championship since 1973 and spark jubilant celebrations across the city.

Led by a magnificent performance from Jalen Brunson, who scored a game-high 45 points, the Knicks clinched the NBA Finals series 4-1.

The victory capped a remarkable postseason run in which New York repeatedly fought back from sizeable deficits, including in all four of their Finals victories.

Brunson, who was named Finals Most Valuable Player, reflected on the team's resilience during the on-court celebrations.

"I'm in awe," an emotional Brunson said.

"Whenever someone counted us out, we found a way to come back and do something about it. It's everything we dreamed of. It's why I came to New York."

San Antonio made another fast start and established a double-digit advantage in the opening quarter. However, the Knicks gradually clawed their way back, reducing a 16-point deficit before taking control in the closing stages.

The Spurs, inspired by rookie Dylan Harper's 25 points off the bench and Victor Wembanyama's 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, remained competitive throughout but were unable to regain the lead after New York moved ahead with less than four minutes remaining.

Wembanyama acknowledged the disappointment of defeat.

"This is the biggest lesson of my life, the biggest learning moment," the 22-year-old Frenchman told reporters post-game. "I can't tell exactly what the lesson is, but we're learning from that for sure."

As the final buzzer sounded, celebrations erupted across New York, with thousands of supporters flooding the streets to mark a long-awaited championship triumph.
