Scotland ease past Ireland in Women's T20 World Cup campaign opener

MANCHESTER: Captain Kathryn Bryce backed her blistering half-century with economical bowling figures of 2/19 and propelled Scotland to a resounding 40-run victory over Ireland in the second match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup here at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Ireland captain Gaby Lewis's decision to field first backfired as Scotland piled up a formidable total of 161/5 in their 20 overs, courtesy of a century-plus partnership between skipper Kathryn and wicketkeeper batter Sarah Bryce.

The skipper spearheaded Scotland's batting charge with a blistering half-century and top-scored with a 39-ball 60, studded with six fours and a six.

She was amply supported by wicketkeeper batter Sarah, who made a vital contribution with a brisk 49 off 35 deliveries with the help of four fours and a six.

Ava Canning was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland as she took three wickets for just 27 runs in her four overs, while Arlene Kelly and Aimee Maguire made one scalp apiece.

Set to chase a daunting 162-run target, Ireland could muster 121 before getting bowled in 19.1 overs and thus made an unwanted start to their Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

Right-handed opener Amy Hunter remained the top-scorer for Ireland with an anchoring 39 off 36 deliveries, followed by Orla Prendergast, who made a 23-ball 33.

Besides them, only Kelly (15) and captain Lewis (11) could amass double figures against a disciplined Scotland bowling attack, jointly led by Fraser and Gordon, who picked up three wickets each.

The duo was supported by skipper Bryce, who bagged two wickets for just 19 runs in her 3.1 overs. For her all-round exploits, she was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Notably, the 40-run victory marked Scotland's first at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, while the outcome of the fixture extended Ireland's winless run at the tournament to 18 matches.
