Scotland suffer injury setback ahead of ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026
Scotland to kick off Women's T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on Saturday
EDINBURGH: Scotland's leg-spinner Abtaha Maqsood has been ruled out of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to commence later today with the curtain raiser between hosts England and Sri Lanka.
According to Cricket Scotland, the 27-year-old fractured her hand during their victory over Pakistan in the warm-up match of the upcoming mega event, played at the Country Ground in Derby on Tuesday.
Consequently, Maqsood has been replaced by Yorkshire's right-arm seamer Hannah Rainey in the Scotland squad.
"Abtaha Maqsood has been ruled out of our ICC Women's T20 World Cup campaign due to injury, having sustained a fracture to her hand in our victory over Pakistan," said the cricketing body in a brief statement.
"Abtaha is replaced in the squad by Yorkshire's Hannah Rainey.
"Everyone at Cricket Scotland wishes Abtaha well in her recovery."
Scotland, placed in Group 2, will start their Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Ireland on June 13 before taking on West Indies on June 18 at Headingley in Leeds, which will also host their match against former champions England on June 20.
Their remaining group-stage matches are scheduled to be played on June 23 and 26 against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, respectively.
The European side enter the mega event with a desired momentum in their favour as they edged out Netherlands and Bangladesh to win a home T20I tri-series earlier this month and followed it up with triumphs over the Dutch side and Pakistan in the warm-up fixtures.
