Punjab government grants Rs150 million to PHF for revival and development of hockey
Provincial government says grant approved in response to formal request submitted by PHF
KARACHI: The government of Punjab on Thursday announced a Rs150 million grant to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) for the revival and development of the sport in the country.
The provincial government, in its press release, said it approved the grant on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and in response to a formal request submitted by the PHF, adding that the funding would be aimed at various measures to revive the national sport, including talent identification and the grassroots development programs.
"On the direction of the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Government of Punjab has approved a grant of PKR 150 million for the promotion of hockey at the grassroots level and for strengthening technical and coaching development across Pakistan," the press release read.
"The decision was taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee chaired by Senior Minister Punjab Maryam Aurangzeb. The meeting was attended by the Provincial Finance Minister, Secretary Finance, Secretary Sports, and other senior officials.
"The grant was approved in response to a formal request submitted by the Pakistan Hockey Federation. The funding is aimed at reviving Pakistan hockey by investing in talent identification, grassroots development programs, modern coaching standards, and technical capacity building.
"This initiative reflects the Punjab Government's continued commitment to the revival of national sports, particularly hockey, which holds a historic place in Pakistan's sporting identity."
According to the Punjab government, the PHF thanked the entire provincial cabinet, including CM Maryam Nawaz and Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, for their timely support and commitment to the development of the national sport.
"A spokesperson for the Pakistan Hockey Federation expressed deep appreciation for the support extended by the Punjab Government. The Federation thanked the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, and the entire provincial cabinet for their timely intervention and commitment to the development of hockey in Pakistan," it added.
"The Pakistan Hockey Federation stated that this support will play a vital role in rebuilding the sport's infrastructure, improving performance standards, and creating new opportunities for young athletes across the country."
