'Ready to serve': Younis Khan signals willingness for PCB role
Younis said he would be willing to serve Pakistan in any role assigned to him
KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan expressed his readiness to contribute to Pakistan cricket in any capacity if given the opportunity by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during his visit to Baldia Town Stadium.
Younis said he would be willing to serve Pakistan in any role assigned to him and emphasised that retired players and experienced support staff are essential for strengthening the national setup.
He added that if entrusted with responsibility for the national team, he would try to fulfil it to the best of his abilities.
“If I am given an opportunity, I am ready to serve Pakistan in any capacity,” Younis said.
“If I am assigned responsibility for the national team, I will try to perform it well. Retired players and support staff are needed for a team. Whoever gets the chance should serve Pakistan as a Pakistani.”
His remarks come amid recent speculation linking him with a potential role within the PCB setup, including reports suggesting he could replace former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as head coach of the red-ball team.
Sarfaraz, who led Pakistan to the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy triumph in 2017, was appointed head coach in April this year. His first assignment was a two-match away Test series against Bangladesh, part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
However, Pakistan endured a difficult start under his tenure, suffering a 2-0 series whitewash against Bangladesh — their second consecutive defeat against the same opposition in the longest format.
Despite the setback, Sarfaraz has been cleared to continue as red-ball head coach for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies and England.
It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan are scheduled to play a two-Test series against the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago from July 25–29 and August 2–6.
The Test tour of England is expected to begin on August 19 at Headingley, followed by matches at Lord’s on August 27 and Edgbaston on September 9, although the official schedule is yet to be formally confirmed.
