All-round Mosaddek Hossain helps Bangladesh beat Australia in first ODI

DHAKA: All-rounder Mosaddek Hossain starred as Bangladesh defeated Australia by 86 runs (DLS method) in the opening ODI of the three-match series, with rain forcing an early end to the contest at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

The result marked Bangladesh’s first ODI win over Australia, ending a 21-year wait since their previous victory on June 18, 2005, during the NatWest Series in Cardiff.

The match was ultimately abandoned due to persistent rain, with Australia trailing the DLS target at the time, confirming a winning start for the hosts in the series.

Batting first, Bangladesh posted 284-8 in their allotted 50 overs, driven by an unbeaten 86 from Mosaddek Hossain, who marked a strong return to the side after 2022. He struck seven fours and three sixes from 70 deliveries.

Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67 from 86 balls, hitting nine fours and a six, while Tanzid Hasan added a brisk 54 off 44 deliveries. Towhid Hridoy made 31, and Taskin Ahmed provided a late push with 20 from 16 balls.

For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the pick of the bowlers with 3-38, while Liam Scott, Matt Renshaw and Xavier Bartlett shared the remaining wickets.

In reply, Australia were restricted to 191-9 in 42.2 overs as Bangladesh produced a disciplined bowling performance led by Nahid Rana.

Cameron Green top-scored with 52 from 66 balls, while Alex Carey made 47 off 62 deliveries. Cooper Connolly contributed 35, but wickets fell at regular intervals as the visitors failed to build partnerships.

Nahid Rana claimed 4-41, while Mustafizur Rahman and Mosaddek Hossain took two wickets each. Taskin Ahmed also chipped in with a wicket to complete a dominant all-round display for the hosts.
