The versatile defender Aubrey Modiba has returned to full training with South Africa ahead of their opening FIFA World Cup match against Mexico on 12 June, providing a major boost for Bafana Bafana.

Modiba had been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury during the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on 17 May.

His absence raised concerns over his availability for the World Cup, but head coach Hugo Broos has now confirmed that the defender is back training with the squad and remains on track to feature in the tournament opener.

"I think things are going well with Aubrey and we'll give him special treatment, so I think from [Monday] he will train with the group," said Broos.

"And if nothing happens in the next days, Aubrey should be available for the game on Thursday."

South Africa will begin their World Cup campaign against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Thursday.

Although Modiba had taken part in portions of recent training sessions, his workload was carefully managed as he continued his recovery.

During his absence, Broos handed opportunities to Samukele Kabini and Bradley Cross in friendly matches, allowing both players to strengthen their claims for a starting place.

Modiba's injury came amid wider concerns over player workload following Mamelodi Sundowns' demanding 2025–26 campaign.

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso had previously warned about the risk of burnout among several Bafana Bafana players due to fixture congestion.

Eight members of South Africa's World Cup squad were part of the Mamelodi Sundowns side at the conclusion of the 2025–26 season, highlighting the significant contribution of the club to the national team setup.
