Ben Stokes' England Test captaincy under scrutiny amid ECB investigation

LONDON: Ben Stokes’ future as England Test captain is in doubt after he and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were placed under investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over an alleged breach of team protocols following an incident at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday.

The incident, which occurred after England’s 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, has been described by the ECB as a “breach of team protocols” and has now been referred to the Cricket Regulator. 

Stokes is reportedly considering his position as captain as the inquiry continues. Both the players are expected to miss the second Test at The Oval, starting June 17, while investigations are ongoing.

No injuries were reported, though the matter is understood to have involved individuals linked to Saracens Rugby Club during end-of-season celebrations, with the initial dispute reportedly stemming from an altercation involving Atkinson and an unnamed academy player.

In an official statement, the ECB confirmed it is seeking further information and will announce the squad for the second Test in due course, adding that the Cricket Regulator has been informed.

"Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible."

The timing of the incident has raised further concerns within English cricket, coming months after the introduction of stricter behavioural guidelines and a midnight curfew for players following scrutiny of off-field conduct during England’s previous overseas tours.

England vice-captain Harry Brook would be the likely candidate to lead the side should Stokes be unavailable for the second Test, as the team awaits clarity on the investigation and squad selection.

Stokes has previously stated he had reduced his alcohol consumption, though he recently spoke of celebrating England’s Test win with teammates. His career has also featured past disciplinary issues, most notably a 2017 street altercation in Bristol, for which he was later sanctioned by the ECB.

England are yet to announce their squad for the second Test as the governing body continues its inquiry into the incident.
