Harry Kane’s 79th goal seals England win over New Zealand in warm-up match

TAMPA: Harry Kane’s 79th international goal secured a narrow 1-0 victory for England over New Zealand in a FIFA World Cup 2026 warm-up match here at the Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, as Thomas Tuchel’s side made a subdued start to their preparations in testing conditions.

Kane guided in Djed Spence’s cross just before half-time, registering what was also described as his 67th goal of the season for club and country.

The strike proved decisive in a match where England struggled to break down a determined New Zealand side ranked 81 places lower in the world rankings.

Despite the win, England were far from their fluent best, with clear-cut chances at a premium in the Florida heat.

New Zealand, who had been beaten 4-0 by Haiti earlier in the week, defended resolutely and limited the European side’s attacking rhythm.

“We’re here for preparation more than the result,” said Kane after the match.

“It’s the best shape I’ve ever been in my career. I’m excited, can’t wait for it to get started.”

Tuchel remained relaxed about the performance, insisting the focus was on conditioning and integration rather than results.

“The energy is right and the quality will come,” he said. “The better the opponent gets, the better we will get.”

Ivan Toney replaced Kane among 11 second-half changes, and briefly thought he had earned a penalty, only for the decision to be overturned due to a marginal offside call.

England will open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17, before facing Ghana and Panama in Group L. New Zealand will compete in Group G alongside Iran, Belgium and Egypt.
