Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur misses Monaco qualifying amid health concern

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur will miss Saturday’s crucial qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix after being admitted to a local hospital for medical checks and remaining under observation.

The Frenchman was present at the Circuit de Monaco on Friday, overseeing a highly encouraging day for Ferrari as the team topped both practice sessions.

However, Ferrari confirmed on Saturday morning that Vasseur would not be at the track, while declining to disclose details regarding his condition.

"Fred Vasseur will not be present at the circuit today," the Ferrari statement said.

"Following some medical checks, Fred will remain under observation at a local medical facility. No further medical information will be provided.

"We wish Fred a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back at the track soon."

Vasseur's departure may prove to be a crucial moment for Ferrari, who seem to have a big chance of winning the Grand Prix this season.

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, led the way at the start of the second practice on Friday, finishing 0.111 seconds ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc.

The best time for Hamilton was 0.168 seconds better than world champion Max Verstappen, the fastest non-Ferrari driver.

Ferrari arrived in Monaco optimistic about its prospects, as the narrow and demanding street circuit is well suited to the characteristics of the race car.

Qualifying, scheduled to begin at 4pm local time on Saturday, is widely regarded as the most important session of the Monaco weekend, with overtaking opportunities during Sunday’s race traditionally at a premium.
