Lewis Koumas’ late header earns Wales draw against Ghana

WALES: Lewis Koumas scored deep into stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Wales against Ghana in an international friendly here at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, denying the visitors a winning start under new head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Wales dominated much of the contest and created the better opportunities, particularly during an impressive first-half display.

Daniel James came closest to breaking the deadlock when he struck both the post and the crossbar in quick succession, with David Brooks providing the assists for both chances.

Despite Wales’ superiority, Ghana gradually grew into the game and nearly capitalised on a mistake from goalkeeper Karl Darlow before the break.

Darlow, however, recovered well to deny Jordan Ayew after a misplaced pass had gifted Ghana possession.

The hosts continued to control proceedings after half-time but were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal.

Ghana struck on the counter-attack in the 68th minute when Ernest Nuamah forced Darlow into a save.

After the rebound hit the post, substitute Caleb Yirenkyi reacted quickest to slot home and give the Black Stars the lead.

With defeat looming, Wales pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded in the third minute of added time when Neco Williams delivered an inviting cross from the right and Koumas stooped to head home his first international goal.

The result extends Wales’ winless run to three matches but offered encouragement after a spirited display.

For Ghana, the draw ends a five-game losing streak and provides a welcome boost ahead of a challenging World Cup group featuring England, Croatia and Panama.
