Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has revealed his plans moving forward with the club for the rest of the season.
United on Tuesday appointed their former midfielder Carrick as an interim boss until the end of the season, following the departure of their former coach, Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on January 5 after his bold statement.
Amorim called out the club’s scouting department and sporting director, saying they should "do their jobs" and that he's the "manager, not the coach", following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
Carrick, Manchester United’s new boss, is set to manage his first match on Saturday against Manchester City in the Premier League.
In the pre-match press conference, Carrick was asked about the definition of success near him, and his answer was improvement.
“Yeah, I think improvement, you know, I think certainly improvement, helping improve individuals. I think big part of what I really enjoy is improving individuals, and in the end, I think if you improve the individuals, you know, we create a better team,” Carrick said.
“So certainly working with the players and improving them with that, I think, and yeah, listen results, you know that’s what it is.
“There’s an element of performance, there’s an element of improvement, and there’s an element of doing what it takes to win in certain ways on certain occasions. We want to keep pushing and finishing high up as we possibly can, and we’ll see where that takes us.”
When asked about the expectations of the leadership of the club, he said there are no specific expectations, but we want to finish near the top of the league and qualify for Europe.
”We want to be near the top of the league, but we got to take some small steps towards that and European football obviously would be a step forward, and we got to keep pushing,” he added.
United are currently in seventh position in the Premier League with 32 points in 21 matches.
