UFC legend Daniel Cormier has said that Jon Jones would never be as successful a coach as Khabib Nurmagomedov is.
Jones is coaching Gable Steveson, the 2020 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle wrestling, who started his mixed martial arts (MMA) career last year, and is planning a huge UFC debut in 2026.
Steveson is the first MMA prospect who has flourished under the guidance of the former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion.
But as a war of words continues following their renewal of conflict on the ALF Reality show, Cormier has explained why Jones could not become as good a coach as Khabib is at the time, saying he does not have one key attribute that is required to become the sport’s top coaches.
“You know what Khabib is? And why he’s such a great coach? Khabib is the most selfless person you’ve ever met,” Cormier said.
“He can put his athletes above himself, in front of him, in everything that he does. In order to be a great coach, you cannot have an ego. You have to become secondary to everyone that you coach.”
He added that, as Jon Jones is active, it would be difficult for him to remain selfless and make Steveson a star.
“Jon, he’s still active and on the roster, and I don’t know if he can be as giving and selfless to make (Steveson) the true star of the show,” he continued.
“You have to make your athlete the star of the show.
“I watched Khabib spend a lot of time away from his family to be with those guys to make sure that they’re ready. I just don’t know if that’s Jon.”
