AFCON: CAF suspends Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o for four matches

Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), is suspended on Thursday for four matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for alleged misconduct during Cameroon’s 2-0 loss to Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on 09 January 2026.

In front of CAF President Patrice Motsepe, Eto'o allegedly made an irate gesture against refereeing decisions.

Additionally, players from both teams bumped into one another, and the CAF announced on Sunday that it has begun looking into violent altercations that occurred during AFCON games.

CAF disciplinary board charged Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Mr Samuel Eto’o Fils, with misconduct.

The board finds him guilty of violating the principles of sportsmanship set out in Article 2(3) of the CAF Statutes and Article 82 of the CAF Disciplinary Code for his misconduct during the match.

They have also fined Eto’o $20,000, a decision FECAFOOT said ‘lacks any explicit justification’.

FECAFOOT criticised the rushed process behind the decision, promised to appeal, and expressed continued support for its president while committing to fair disciplinary principles.

“The expedited procedure leading to this decision raises serious concerns regarding the fundamental requirements of a fair process,” FECAFOOT said on Thursday, adding it would appeal.

“FECAFOOT reaffirms its support for its president and its commitment to respecting the principles governing credible disciplinary justice,” it added.

Hosts Morocco will play Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, while Nigeria takes on Egypt in the third-place playoff a day before.
