The youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl, Mike Tomlin, has notified the Pittsburgh Steelers that he will step down as head coach, the team announced on Tuesday.

His team was eliminated from the playoffs in a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Monday, Tomlin’s seventh straight postseason defeat dating to 2016.

Tomlin thanked the team’s owners for their support in a statement, citing that the team has played a vital role in his life for years.

“This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team,” Tomlin said.

He added that fans' passion and high standards reflect pride in having led such a historic franchise.

“I want to also thank Steelers Nation. Your passion, loyalty, and high expectations represent what makes this franchise truly special. Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team.”

Team president Art Rooney II said in a statement, expressing deep gratitude and respect for Tomlin’s long-term leadership and contributions over 19 years.

“Obviously, I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years. It is hard for me to put into words the level of respect and appreciation I have for Coach Tomlin,” Rooney said.

The paragon of stability in the NFL, Pittsburgh will now look for only its fourth head coach since 1969.
