KARACHI: Pakistan's wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan on Monday had a bizarre end to his knock for Melbourne Renegades during the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 match against Sydney Thunder as he was called back by captain Will Sutherland.
The incident occurred following the conclusion of the 18th over of the visiting team's innings when Rizwan, unbeaten on 26 off 23 deliveries, having struck two fours and a six, was called back to the pavilion by Renegades captain Sutherland to make way for himself to bat.
Fans reacted strongly to the right-handed batter being forced to retire out, calling it an embarrassment, as the video quickly went viral on social media.
Rizwan has struggled with the bat in the ongoing tournament, scoring 167 runs in eight matches at an average of 20.88, without registering a fifty.
Interestingly, the former Pakistan white-ball captain was the sixth batter to be retired out in the shortest format in 2026, joining an unwanted list, also featuring West Indies' Roston Chase and Netherlands' Tim Pringle.
Chase, who has thus far represented West Indies in 57 Tests, 69 ODIs and 49 T20Is, suffered the bizarre dismissal while representing Pretoria Capitals in SA20.
Despite batting at a strike rate of 160, the West Indian all-rounder was called back by captain Keshav Maharaj to make way for compatriot Sherfane Rutherford, who, however, fell for a two-ball duck.
The tactical move eventually benefitted the Capitals as they finished at 201/4 in their 20 overs, adding 15 more to their total off the remaining 10 deliveries after Chase's retired out dismissal.
Pringle, on the other hand, was retired out while representing Northern Districts in the Super Smash match against Canterbury.
The Dutch all-rounder was struggling in the middle, managing just five off 12 deliveries, and was thus called back at the conclusion of the 12th over with the scoreboard reading 133/2. The move proved beneficial as Northern Districts piled up a mammoth total of 240/4 in their 20 overs.
