Liverpool right back Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the rest of the season as he is set to undergo surgery after injuring his knee in the 0-0 draw at Arsenal, the Premier League club announced on Sunday.
In stoppage time, Bradley stumbled near the touchline, in an incident that sparked a brawl, when Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli threw the ball at him and then physically pushed him off the pitch, seemingly under the impression that the Liverpool player was wasting time.
Both Martinelli and Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate were booked following the heated reaction from the players.
Bradley, who plays as a full-back for Northern Ireland, was eventually taken off on a stretcher in obvious pain, and Martinelli later apologised for his reaction in the heat of the moment.
"Conor and I have messaged and I've already apologised to him. I really didn't understand he was seriously injured in the heat of the moment," Martinelli wrote.
"I want to say I'm deeply sorry for reacting. Sending Conor all my best again for a quick recovery."
Liverpool FC confirmed that Conor Bradley has sustained an injury and will undergo surgery.
"Liverpool FC can confirm Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury," the club said in a statement.
"Bradley will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a period of rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre. No timeframe is being placed on his return to playing at this stage of the process."
According to British media, it was a season-ending injury, although Bradley had not fractured his anterior cruciate ligament. However, he did suffer damage to the bone and ligaments in his left knee.
Liverpool will face Barnsley in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday.
