Former world number three Elina Svitolina claimed her 19th WTA title, kicking off her new season with a strong performance by defeating China’s Wang Xinyu 6-3, 7-6(6) in the Auckland Open final here at the Centre Court on Sunday.
The 31-year-old Ukrainian had the skill and experience to overcome her aggressive 24-year-old opponent, though she was not playing at her absolute best as she resumed preparations for the Australian Open following a long break.
Svitolina celebrated her tournament victory, marking a strong comeback after a disappointing end to last season.
"It feels amazing to win another title especially after a not great end to last season," said the Ukrainian, a three-time quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park.
She praised the challenge of tough matches and expressed hope that the win would boost her performance for the rest of the season.
"It was nice to get tough matches here this week and win the final, hopefully we can build on that for the rest of the season."
Wang, appearing in her second WTA final but still seeking her first title, troubled the Ukrainian early on with deep groundstrokes and well-executed drop shots, but too often allowed the world number 13 off the hook with simple errors.
With 19 victories in 23 WTA final appearances, the former world number three boasts an incredible record.
After qualifying for her first grass-court final in Berlin last year, the 57th-ranked player is recovering from two years of injury setbacks.
