Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka comfortably defeated Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4 in the Brisbane International here at Pat Rafter Arena on Saturday, securing her place in the final of the Australian Open warm-up event for the third consecutive year.
In her first tournament of the year, the world number one maintained her stellar performance by defeating Madison Keys, the defending Melbourne Park winner, in straight sets.
It was anticipated that the semi-final matchup with Muchova, who had a 3-1 head-to-head advantage, would be more difficult. But Sabalenka grabbed charge right away, winning the opening set with a strong backhand and breaking Muchova in the second game.
Muchova put more pressure on her in the second set, but Sabalenka persevered and won 6-4, 6-4 after breaking at 5-4. When the competition starts on January 18 at Melbourne Park, the four-time Grand Slam winner is now aiming for a third Australian Open championship.
Reflecting on her triumph, Sabalenka acknowledged the tough moments in the match's final stages but expressed relief and satisfaction in closing it out in straight sets.
"There were a lot of close misses at the end of the second set, but I'm super happy to close this match in straight sets," said Sabalenka, who prevailed on her fourth match point.
"She's a great opponent and I knew that if I gave her that opportunity in the last games, she would take it, and it would be a bit trickier to play. I'm super happy I got the win."
Up next for the Belarusian is either American Jessica Pegula or Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk.
