KABUL: Afghanistan have named their squad for the 50-over Under-19 World Cup, which begins on January 15 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Mahboob Khan, who turned 19 on New Year's Day, will lead the side. He brings significant leadership experience, having captained Afghanistan at the 2024 and 2025 U19 Asia Cup tournaments.

The squad boasts a strong spin-bowling lineup.

Wahidullah Zadran is the standout name in the bowling attack. The 18-year-old offspinner has already made his mark at senior level, featuring for Gulf Giants in last year's ILT20 tournament.

He also entered the IPL auction in December, making him one of the youngest players to do so, although he went unsold. Wahidullah will be supported by left-arm spinner Zaitullah Shaheen and legspinner Hafeez Zadran.

The batting department features promising talents such as Khalid Ahmadzai, who has a first-class century to his name, and Uzairullah Niazai. Fast bowler Nooristani Omarzai is another key player to watch in the tournament.

Afghanistan qualified for the U19 World Cup by winning the Asia Qualifier last year, remaining unbeaten throughout the campaign. They have been drawn in Group D alongside South Africa, Tanzania and West Indies.
