England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chief Executive Officer Richard Gould has addressed the outcome of the 2025–26 Ashes series, expressing disappointment over England's 4–1 defeat in Australia while outlining plans for the future.

In a statement released by the ECB, Gould acknowledged the high hopes at the start of the tour and reflected on the team's performance in Australia.

"This Ashes tour began with significant hope and anticipation, and it is therefore deeply disappointing that we have been unable to fulfil our ambition of winning the Ashes in Australia," Gould stated.

He went on to highlight the positives amid the setbacks, noting moments of resilience but also the inconsistency that ultimately cost England.

"While there were moments of strong performance and resilience during the series, including a hard-fought victory in the fourth Test in Melbourne, we were not consistent enough across all conditions and phases of the contest. Australia ultimately deserved to retain the Ashes," he said.

The 56-year-old also outlined plans for improvement and commitment to learning from this campaign and strengthening the team for future challenges.

"We will take many lessons from this tour and are determined to improve quickly. Our focus is on regaining the Ashes in 2027. A thorough review of the campaign is already underway, covering tour planning and preparation, individual performance and behaviours, and our ability to adapt and respond effectively as circumstances require," he added.

Looking ahead to the immediate future, he addressed the team's preparation for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India.

"The men's team now moves on to Sri Lanka ahead of the T20 World Cup, which begins in February, and we will implement the necessary changes over the coming months," he said.

Gould concluded his statement by expressing appreciation to hosts and supporters, emphasising the team's commitment to repaying their faith.

"We are grateful for the courtesy and hospitality shown to us by Cricket Australia throughout the tour. As always, we are indebted to the travelling supporters who followed the team through thick and thin. Their loyalty and support have been humbling, and we are committed to repaying their faith with stronger performances in the future," he concluded.

Following the Ashes, England will travel to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series comprising three ODIs and three T20Is.

For the unversed, England, currently in Group C, will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Nepal at Wankhede Stadium on February 8, followed by a clash against the West Indies at the same venue on February 11.

Their third group-stage match will be against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens on February 14, with the final group match against Italy at the same venue on February 16.
