Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank clarified that the incident was an honest mistake after fans sparked outrage after a photograph holding a cup featuring the emblem of arch-rivals Arsenal on Wednesday.
Tottenham supporters, who had previously expressed their dissatisfaction with the manager during a string of subpar performances, became even more incensed when they saw pictures of Frank strolling around Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium on social media.
Following Wednesday's 3-2 loss from Bournemouth, which dropped Spurs to 14th place in the Premier League, Frank expressed dissatisfaction with enquiries regarding the cup at his post-match news conference.
Frank expressed frustration over being questioned about taking an Arsenal cup, calling it a normal routine and criticising the trivial nature of the question.
"It's fair to say that we are not winning every single football match, it would be absolutely stupid of me to take a cup with Arsenal on it (deliberately)," Frank said.
"They've (Arsenal) been in the changing room the game before us," he added. "It's normal to say, 'give me a cup of espresso' before every game. I think it's a little bit sad in football that I need to be asked a question like that."
Frank argued that worrying about him using another club's cup shows they are heading in the wrong direction, calling it foolish.
"We are definitely going in the wrong direction if we are worrying about me having a cup of another club," added Frank. "Of course I wouldn't do that. That would be really stupid."
Tottenham next hosts Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Saturday.
