ROME: Italian international golfer Emanuele Galeppini tragically passed away at the age of 16 following a fire at a New Year’s Eve bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, the Italian Golf Federation confirmed on Friday.
Galeppini was originally from Genoa, but he lived in Dubai with his family and was regarded as a rising star in the amateur golf scene. He was in Switzerland with friends when a blaze broke out at the Le Constellation bar in the early hours of 1 January.
The Italian Golf Federation expressed its sorrow over the loss of the young athlete, praising his passion and integrity.
"The Italian Golf Federation mourns the passing of Emanuele Galeppini, a young athlete who carried with him passion and genuine values," the statement read.
"At this time of great sorrow, our thoughts are with his family and all those who loved him. Emanuele, you will forever remain in our hearts."
According to Swiss officials, the incident resulted in over 110 injuries and over 40 fatalities. Officials cautioned that it will take time to identify every victim and ascertain the ultimate death toll because of the severity of the burns.
According to earlier remarks from Italy's envoy to Switzerland, thirteen Italians are reportedly being treated at a hospital, while six are still unaccounted for.
Galeppini and his family had been in Crans-Montana. According to reports, he went to the Constellation bar with two pals who were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment after escaping the fire.
