Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital after sustaining minor injuries in a car accident in Nigeria, which tragically claimed the lives of two of his friends, the state governments have confirmed on Wednesday.

Authorities in both Lagos and Ogun states announced via X that Joshua was released from the hospital late this afternoon.

"Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon. Though heavy-hearted and full of emotion over the loss of his two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to recuperate at home," the statement from the Lagos and Ogun state governments said.

The 36-year-old boxer was involved in a collision on Monday when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with another car. Two of his close friends and teammates tragically lost their lives in the accident.

Anthony Joshua was involved in a boxing match with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami, where he knocked out the American in the sixth round of the showdown.

The boxing match between Paul and former two-time world champion Joshua was one of the most-watched in recent times.

It was Joshua’s comeback fight since his loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024, a match in which he sustained injuries.

Joshua has also been planning a fight with Tyson Fury; no deal has been done, but now both parties are hopeful that the two British heavyweight boxers will finally meet in the ring in 2026.
