According to the cricketing body, in his short-term appointment, effective from December 15 to January 25, Malinga will be tasked to support the preparation and development of Sri Lanka's pacers leading into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which the country hosts, alongside India, from February 7 to March 8.

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Lasith Malinga as the Consultant – Fast bowling coach for the national men's team," the SLC said in a statement.

"His appointment is on a short-term basis for a period of one month, effective from 15th December to 25th January 2026.

"Sri Lanka Cricket aims to leverage Malinga's vast international experience and renowned expertise in death bowling, particularly in the shortest format of the game to strengthen Sri Lanka's preparations for the upcoming World Cup."

He also captained Sri Lanka to their maiden Men's T20 World Cup title in 2014.
