The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a two-year, $29 million contract with All-Star first baseman Ryan O’Hearn, according to international media reports on Tuesday.
O’Hearn, 32, was selected for his first All-Star Game last season after hitting career highs with a .281 batting average, 17 home runs, and 63 RBIs across 144 games for the Baltimore Orioles (94) and San Diego Padres (50).
The free agent will join a Pittsburgh roster that recently added All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe, outfielder Jake Mangum, and left-hander Mason Montgomery in a three-team trade last week, as well as former Boston Red Sox outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia and veteran reliever Gregory Soto earlier this month.
Over his career, O’Hearn has posted a .252 batting average with 84 home runs and 313 RBIs in 740 regular-season games for the Kansas City Royals (2018–22), Orioles (2023–25), and Padres (2025), who acquired him and outfielder Ramon Laureano from Baltimore in exchange for six prospects at the trade deadline.
Kansas City originally selected O’Hearn in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Sam Houston State.
The Pirates are coming off a 71–91 season, during which their offense ranked at or near the bottom of the majors in most key statistical categories, including runs and home runs.
In eight MLB seasons, including a five-year stint with the Royals, O’Hearn has maintained a career batting average of .252, although his numbers have significantly improved over the last three seasons.
