The Boston Red Sox acquired three-time All-Star Willson Contreras and cash considerations from the St. Louis Cardinals, international media reported on Sunday.
In return, the Cardinals reportedly will receive righty Hunter Dobbins and minor-league pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita, to finalise the deal.
This is the second time in two months that the two sides will trade. All-Star right-hander Sonny Gray gave up on his no-trade clause to exit the Cardinals and join the Red Sox on Nov. 25.
According to reports, the Cardinals are going to send $8 million to the Red Sox to help cover the remaining $42.5 million on Contreras' contract. He is due to make $18 million in 2026 and $18.5 million in 2027.
Contreras is a former catcher who will likely man first base and DH for the Red Sox, a role he played for the Cardinals in 2025.
In 135 games last season, Contreras, 33, batted .257, including 20 homers and 80 RBIs.
If we look at three-time All-Star Contreras' career, he is a .258 hitter with 172 homers and 548 RBIs in 1,078 games he played with the Chicago Cubs (2016-22) and Cardinals.
In 13 games (11 starts) last season, Dobbins, 26, posted a 4-1 record with a 4.13 ERA before sustaining a torn ACL.
Fajardo, 19, went 1-4 with a 2.25 ERA after featuring 72 innings between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Salem this past year.
Aita, 22, in 23 games (19 starts) split between the Single-A and High-A levels, posted a 5-7 record with a 3.98 ERA in.
