Max Verstappen wins F1 Action of the Year for Imola overtake

Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen has been awarded the F1 Action of the Year for his spectacular opening-lap overtake on Oscar Piastri at the Imola Grand Prix, despite being unable to attend the awards ceremony.

In a pre-recorded message, the Dutch driver explained his absence and apologised for missing the event due to medical restrictions that prevented him from travelling.

"I'm very sorry that I couldn't be with you tonight. The doctors have prevented me from flying," Verstappen said.

The 26-year-old also took the opportunity to congratulate his fellow drivers, McLaren, and Lando Norris on their impressive season, expressing how much he enjoyed competing against them.

"A big congratulations to McLaren and especially Lando. You guys had an unbelievable season, and it was really cool to be able to race against you until the end," Verstappen added.

Verstappen’s overtake on Piastri, in which he executed a daring and precise manoeuvre past the McLaren driver, impressed fans and fellow competitors alike, earning him the prestigious accolade.

Although he could not be present in person, his message highlighted both his sportsmanship and respect for his rivals, capping off another memorable season in Formula 1.

It is worth noting that Lando Norris was officially crowned Formula One World Champion, with his teammate Oscar Piastri finishing third in the overall standings, as McLaren concluded an outstanding campaign.

The 26-year-old Norris became the 35th Formula One World Champion since the inaugural title in 1950 and the 11th Briton to claim the sport’s ultimate prize.
