VISAKHAPATNAM: India's experienced top-order batter Rohit Sharma on Saturday etched his name in history as he became only the fourth batter from the country to breach the 20000-run barrier in international cricket.
Rohit achieved the milestone during India's third and final ODI against South Africa, currently underway here at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, when he punched a length delivery from Keshav Maharaj for a single in the 14th over.
His 27th run in the ongoing fixture took his international runs tally to 20000, making him only the fourth Indian to achieve the remarkable feat, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid.
Most international runs for India
Rohit Sharma went on to register a brisk half-century for India in the series decider against South Africa, making 75 off 73 deliveries, studded with seven fours and three sixes, before falling victim to Maharaj in the 26th over.
His dismissal, however, did not bother the home side as when this story was filed, they were 258/1 in 39 overs while chasing 271, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli, unbeaten on 112 and 57, respectively.
Earlier, South Africa could accumulate 270 before being bowled out in 47.5 overs despite a blistering century from experienced top-order batter Quinton de Kock.
De Kock top-scored for the Proteas with 106 off 89 deliveries with the help of eight fours and six sixes, followed by captain Temba Bavuma, who made a 67-ball 48.
