BRISBANE: Australia's experienced bowler Mitchell Starc hailed Pakistan legend Wasim Akram as the "pinnacle" of left-arm pace bowling in Tests after breaking his long-standing record during the second Ashes fixture against England here at The Gabba on Thursday.
Starc, who claimed the crucial wickets of Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook in the day-night clash, became the leading wicket-taking left-arm pacer in Test cricket with 418 scalps, surpassing Akram, who previously held the record with 414 wickets in 104 Tests.

The 35-year-old added three more to his tally after surpassing Akram's all-time record and finished the opening day with sensational bowling figures of 6/71 in 19 overs, while Joe Root's drought-ending century kept England afloat as the touring side reached 325/9.
Following the conclusion of an eventful opening day of the second Ashes Test, Starc showcased humility during a brief interview with former England cricketer Michael Vaughan, calling Akram "still better" despite breaking his iconic record.
"Wasim is still the pinnacle of left-armers and lined up there with the best-ever with the ball. So, yeah, I think he's still better," Starc told Vaughan.
Earlier, Akram was quick to congratulate Starc on the achievement, lauding his dedication and skills.
"Super Starc! Proud of you, mate. Your incredible hard work sets you apart, and it was only a matter of time before you crossed my tally of wickets. I am pleased to give this to you! Go well, and keep soaring to new heights in your stellar career," Akram wrote.
