Bowling coach Waqar Younis has once again criticised veteran pacers Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir for "betraying" the national team by quitting Test cricket prior to the crucial tour of Australia last year, Daily Jang reported.

In July 2019, Amir, at the tender age of 27, had shocked the cricket world by announcing his retirement from the five-day format in order to elongate his white-ball career.

Wahab followed suit and in September declared to take an indefinite break from red-ball cricket at 34.

Younis, while addressing local media in a video conference from Australia, revealed that the duo's decision had caught the team by surprise and even the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) only found out about the development through their social media posts.

As a result, selectors had to take induct Musa Khan and Naseem Shah into the team before they were probably ready for the gargantuan tour.

"The news badly affected the team and we had no choice but opt for the youngsters," he said.

Waqar urged the PCB to revise its retirement policy in order to prevent other players in their prime from calling it quit in Tests.

"While we cannot stop players from playing a format of their choice, there should be a retirement policy," he said.
