With the Premier League suspended due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Liverpool Football Club have furloughed 200 non-playing staff, Sky Sports reported.

The news came after Premier League clubs sat down with managers and player reps to discuss their course of action amid the financial impact.

Other clubs such as Tottenham, Norwich, Newcastle and Bournemouth also placed their workers in furlough.

The news was not well received as former players Jamie Carragher and Dietmar Hamann slammed the club on Twitter for its immoral action.

"Jurgen Klopp showed compassion for all at the start of this pandemic, senior players heavily involved in Premier League players taking wage cuts. Then all that respect & goodwill is lost, poor this Liverpool FC," Carragher wrote.

"Astonished by the news that Liverpool FC takes advantage of the furlough scheme to claim 80 per cent of non-playing staffs wages back of the government. That's not what the scheme was designed for. Contrary to the morals and values of the club I got to know," Hamann's post read.
