Former skipper Shahid Afridi has thrown his weight behind veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez in the debate over the rehabilitation and fast-tracking of tainted cricketers into the national fold.

Afridi, while speaking to Geo News, agreed with Hafeez's opposition of Sharjeel Khan's mooted reintegration into the national team, saying that the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) tendency to give slaps on the wrist in corruption cases against star cricketers is why the menace keeps on popping up.

"I feel examples should have been set in the past but this didn't happen and that is why we have seen such cases on a regular basis," Afridi said.

"I have nothing against anyone but even now if the board wants to set an example it can do that. Only then can we hope to curtail such cases."

Last week, Hafeez had questioned the PCB's selection policy, wondering whether "dignity and honour" was of no value to the board - remarks that had earned him a warning and a phone call from PCB CEO Wasim Khan.
