Aamir Sohail puts his 'expert' cap on to offer bland basic advice to PCB

For a former Pakistan captain and one-half of the country’s greatest opening pair, Aamir Sohail has proven to be a pretty ordinary pundit who almost never fails to say the most obvious and bland basic things.

Even in his playing days, Sohail was known for his fiery and ill-advised aggression (check 1996 World Cup quarter-final) than his cricketing brain. But it should have still worked out pretty well for the lefty in his post-cricket career, since former hotheads generally prove good entertainers, if not shrewd analysts.

Unfortunately for Sohail, this has not been the case at all, which is evident in his recent blog for PakPassion. As always, his write-up has some of the most Captain Obvious things that have already been said a zillion times by him and others.

We present to thou the best (NOT!) bits from Sohail’s magnum doofus.

Monsieur Sohail giving PCB the very ‘original’ advice of fixing batting

“It’s a sad fact that we have been struggling to find good batsmen for the Pakistan team. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the fact that Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik were recalled to the Pakistan T20I squad in recent times. This should have rung alarm bells for the Pakistan team management, and they should have started thinking about how they needed to address this crisis, which is why I feel that we should have inducted more and more Pakistani talent in the PSL...”

Here’s him taking veiled digs at Misbah (we’re no fan but the topic is so 2019)

“Let’s face it, Misbah-ul-Haq never really had experience as a coach before he was given that position for Pakistan. He was given the position of Head Coach by Pakistan and it seemed to be a case of learning on the job as far as he was concerned. If he was now given a chance to work for Islamabad United, then that was good for his experience. To be honest, at this stage, even if he is given an opportunity to work to coach a school team, he should take it, as it will help him.”

Haider Ali needs to work on his 'technique' (whatever that is!)

“There is not much doubt about the fact that Haider Ali is very talented, but I feel that he needs to play more First-Class cricket to improve further. He was fortunate to have been selected for the PSL where there may well have been better batsman than him in Pakistan’s domestic cricket. But now that he has had that chance, he needs to go back to the drawing board, work on the technical and attitude side of his game and if he can improve that further then he can become an asset for Pakistan cricket.”

Mr Sohail critiquing PSL 2020’s highest wicket-taker for his form

Mohammad Hasnain is another bowler whose form is of concern to me. He has been part of the Pakistan side for almost a year now but the quality of his bowling instead of improving has gone downhill and to be honest, it’s a more of a case of getting from bad to worse.

Him being worried about Naseem Shah’s action (well who isn’t?)

“I am worried about Naseem Shah as I have seen him struggling during the PSL and I will emphasise again, as I have done before, that he has a major problem with his bowling action which puts a lot of stress on his body, and this needs to be sorted out as soon as possible.”
