Sharjeel Khan, whose fitness and fast-tracking into national cricket has been keeping fans and critics busy amid coronavirus mayhem, found support from unlikely quarters on Saturday.

While Twitterati debated the pros and cons of picking Sharjeel in the national team due to his batting and despite his poor fitness, his Karachi Kings teammate Mitchell McClenaghan urged critics to “give the bloke a break” as he gave a firsthand account of how hard Sharjeel had been working on his fitness during Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020.

The Kiwi pacer even thought that Sharjeel may have been trying a bit too hard to get fitter at some point.

“[I] witnessed him work very hard off the park everyday during PSL. [He] had minimal rest because he actively wanted to get fitter - often I wondered if he wasn’t trying so hard to lose weight to play for Pakistan would have he performed more consistently with rest?” McClenaghan tweeted.

Sharjeel’s career was just about to take off when in 2017 he was named in a spot-fixing scandal and subsequently banned. After years in doldrums and having served his ban, he resumed his career during PSL 2020, playing a few eye-catching innings, sparking debate if he should be reinstated in the national side – much to the dismay of those who value fitness as well as dignity
