Umar Akmal likely to admit guilt, opt for Agreed Sanctions in corruption case: report

March 21, 2020

Pakistan cricket’s problem child, Umar Akmal, is likely to accept the charges against him and admit his failure to report two separate corruption approaches, meaning that his case could be dealt under the Agrees Sanctions of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) rules instead of going to trial in front of an Anti-Corruption Tribunal – Geo News understands.

According to the sources privy to the matter, chances are that Akmal will plead guilty, leading his case to be wrapped up the way Mohammad Irfan’s was in 2017.

Irfan had admitted his failure to report the spot-fixing offer to the PCB in a timely manner, which was a violation of the PCB’s code of conduct. He was subsequently banned for six months and fined Rs1 million.

It remains unclear if the suspension and the fine would be double in Akmal’s case, since he is alleged to have not reported two unrelated approaches.

Akmal has until March 31 to respond to the charges.
