DUBAI: India’s pace stalwart Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday, won the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024, thanks to his consistent performances across formats.
The right-arm pacer overcame tough competition from Australia’s Travis Head and England’s batting duo of Joe Root and Harry Brook to become the fifth Indian to claim the prestigious accolade, joining Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016) and Virat Kohli (2017 and 2018).
Bumrah was in red-hot form across formats this year and led his side to important victories, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 glory.
The right-arm pacer took 15 wickets from eight outings – including a couple in an enthralling final against South Africa.
The right-arm quick also boasts a formidable record in Tests this year as he snapped 71 wickets in 13 matches, the highest by any bowler in 2024, and only second to Kapil Dev for the most by an Indian pacer in a calendar year.
"Across formats, Bumrah's 2024 exploits were a masterclass in skill, precision, and relentless consistency, as he shattered record after record and cemented his place as the world's premier fast bowler," ICC said.
"The current No.1 ranked bowler in the ICC Test Rankings became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, achieving the feat with a sub-20 bowling average - the best in history."
The Sir Garfield Sobers Award marks a double delight for Jasprit Bumrah, who also bagged the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024 award on Monday.
