KUALA LUMPUR: Vaishnavi Sharma’s brilliant bowling figures of 3/15, followed by Gongadi Trisha’s brisk knock, propelled India to a thumping eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Super Six-stage match of the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup here at the Bayuemas Oval on Sunday.
The victory extended India’s unbeaten run at the 16-team tournament, which helped them qualify for the semi-final with a match to spare.
As a result, a total of three teams – India, Australia and South Africa – have now booked their spots in the final four of the mega event, while England and Nigeria are the frontrunners to seize the remaining berth.
In the high-stakes clash, India won the toss and opted to field and immediately put Bangladesh under pressure as Shabnam Shakil struck on just the third delivery of the match to dismiss Mosammat Eva for a run-a-ball two.
Indian bowlers maintained the pressure by striking at regular intervals and reduced Bangladesh to 23-5 in 10 overs.
Following the slump, skipper Sumaiya Akter and Jannatul Maoua offered some fightback with an important 31-run partnership for the sixth wicket until Vaishnavi removed both set batters in the 17th over as Bangladesh managed to accumulate 64/8 in their 20 overs.
Akter remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with a cautious 21 off 29 deliveries, while Maoua made a 20-ball 14.
Vaishnavi Sharma was the standout bowler for India, taking three wickets, while Shabnam, Joshitha V. J., and Trisha Gongadi chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Chasing a modest 65-run target, India comfortably knocked the winning runs for the loss of just two wickets and 77 balls to spare, thanks to Gongadi’s blitz.
The opening batter top-scored with a 31-ball 40, studded with eight boundaries, while Sanika Chalke chipped in with an unbeaten 11.
For Bangladesh, Habiba Islam and Anisa Akter Soba could pick up a wicket each.
