KOLKATA: Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh on Wednesday, achieved a major milestone as he became India’s leading wicket-taker in men’s T20Is.
The 25-year-old, who made his debut in July 2022, topped India’s wicket-takers’ list in the shortest format during their first T20I of the five-match series against England at Eden Gardens here.
Prior to the series, Arshdeep had 95 scalps to his name, just one shy of India’s then leading wicket-taker Yuzvendra Chahal (96).
The left-arm pacer took just 11 deliveries to go past Chahal as he dismissed both English openers Phil Salt (0) and Ben Duckett (four) in his first two overs.
Arshdeep Singh achieved the landmark in just his 61st innings, 18 less than Chahal, who now sits second in the list, further comprised of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.
Bowler | Innings | Wickets | Year of Debut |
Arshdeep Singh | 61 | 97 | 2022 |
Yuzvendra Chahal | 79 | 96 | 2016 |
Bhuvneshwar Kumar | 86 | 90 | 2012 |
Jasprit Bumrah | 69 | 89 | 2016 |
Hardik Pandya | 98 | 89 | 2016 |
His fierce opening spell jolted England’s batting expedition, who eventually managed to score a modest 132 all out in 20 overs.
Skipper Jos Buttler waged a lone battle for the touring side with a gutsy half-century. He top-scored with a 44-ball 68, studded with eight fours and two sixes.
Harry Brook (17) and Jofra Archer (12) were the other two English batters to amass double figures.
Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh finished with economical bowling figures of 2/17 in his four overs. Besides him, Pandya and Axar Patel bagged two wickets each, while mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy led the charge with three scalps.
